A fingerprint reader is a security device that uses a scanned image of your finger for authentication. With fingerprint security software you can logon to applications and secure web site by scanning your finger instead of typing your user name and password from the keyboard. Some versions of the HP SimplePass fingerprint security software may also be identified as Digital Persona software.

To use a fingerprint reader, there must be at least one Windows User Account, and that account should require a password to logon to Windows. You can register a new fingerprint or web site at any time.
To set up and use HP SimplePass, you should:
Enroll your fingerprints - Add or delete one or more fingerprints to identify yourself as a user.
Register or add a secure logon account - Add the required user names and passwords to log into an application or a secure web site.
Adjust the sensitivity - Make it easy to protect your computer and personal information of the fingerprint reader.

Setting up your fingerprints and passwords will only need to be done once. The HP SimplePass security application will display on-screen prompts to lead you through the process step-by-step.
To launch the fingerprint security application, click Start , type the text protection in the search field, and select HP SimplePass Identification Protection from the listing.
When trying to setup the fingerprint reader, you will be prompted several time to verify that you are the user. There are several different versions of the DigitalPersona and HP SimplePass software, and the instructions on what you should do to verify your logon are not intuitive.
To verify your identity, either press Enter key or scan your finger a couple of times until a prompt is displayed requiring you to type the user password.
Start fingerprint reader for the first time.
When you launch HP SimplePass Identification Protection the first time, the registration program prompts you step-by-step through the fingerprint enrollment process.
Click Start , and select HP SimplePass Identification Protection from the windows menu.
When prompted, you are required to type in password you use to logon to the computer. This prevents other users from setting up fingerprint protection under your user account.
Enroll at least one fingerprint by swiping your index finger across the scanner. With an enrolled finger, you can setup and use the security applications.
Start fingerprint reader to add or delete fingerprints.
You can enroll additional fingers at any time. Depending on how you use the computer, you may get more consistently accurate scans by using a finger other than your index finger.
Click Start , and select HP SimplePass Identification Protection from the windows menu.
On the HP SimplePass Identity Protection window, select Bring me to fingerprints in the left panel.
Before you can make any changes you will be prompted to scan your finger and be identified by the system.
When prompted, click on the picture of the corresponding finger, and then either enroll or remove a fingerprint.
Add a fingerprint - Click on an un-enrolled (gray or non-highlighted) finger and then swipe your finger on the scanner.
Delete a fingerprint - Click on an enrolled (green highlighted) finger and select Yes when prompted, Are you sure you want to delete the fingerprint?
Save - After making any changes, click Save to accept the changes and exit the application.
Once a fingerprint is enrolled, you can register and manage a secure logon account for an application or web site. The Password Manager collects the user name, a password, and any other required values for logging in. To add another secure site, either click the fingerprint logon icon that appears on the secured web site in the browser, or open the HP SimplePass application and use the Password Manager , as shown below.
The easiest way to see what is happening while you are setting up a new password account is to open the HP SimplePass application, and then open the secure application or web site, and put them side-by-side on the screen.
The scanner icon on the application window indicates that the fingerprint reader is available.
Add and manage a new application or web site
In the application or web site logon window, type in the required User Name and Password . Select any other required information such as, the Stay signed in option on this example page.
Scan your finger to open the Add Logon to Password Manager window.
Type a unique name in the Account Name field or accept the default.
Type in the Username , Password , or other required field values.
Click OK to accept the values and close the window.
You can now log out of and close the application window, and then test the fingerprint reader password management function.

Close all applications, and then scan you finger.
If the fingerprint scan is recognized, a list of all the registered accounts displays in the Password Manager.
Double-click on the desired registered account to open the logon window.
To verify your identity, either scan your fingerprint or click Cancel and enter the required information using the keyboard.
The image of your fingerprint stored in the program, represents the condition of your finger at the time it was scanned. If the skin gets dry, or you press the finger onto the reader and distort the skin, or move the finger on a slight angle across the scanner, or move too fast or slow, the scan will not be recognized. The sensitivity of the program can be adjusted to allow for some variation in the fingerprint recognition.
Access sensitivity settings.
To access the sensitivity settings, open the HP SimplePass Identity Protection window, and select Fingerprint Reader in the left panel.
If changing the setting makes very little difference and you are still having problems with the logon, you may want to delete the original fingerprint image and enroll a different finger can be swiped across the scanner at a more consistent speed, and angle, and pressure.
The HP SimplePass Fingerprint reader provides easy security protection if multiple people use the same computer. On a computer, each person should have their own user account, and that account can be accessed using a fingerprint reader.
The parent in a family could have an account with administrator privileges that allow them to install new programs. Each of the children has a personal user account with limited privileges to use, but not install additional programs. Each child's settings and files are protected and are not accessible by their siblings. The parent, as the administrator, has access to all files.
By using a fingerprint reader with HP SimplePass, when one of the children is ready to login, they simply scan their finger and the security protection program identifies them and logs on to the proper account.
Many applications and web sites use unique user names and passwords to protect the users' identity and data. The fingerprint reader can make this job easier, however many users have discovered that after using a fingerprint reader, they forget their passwords. If you are using the fingerprint reader to access half a dozen or more accounts with different user names and different passwords, you should consider what to do if the fingerprint reader fails to recognize your fingerprint.
You could manually record this seldom used information, but it is not a good idea to write the names and passwords on a piece of paper taped to wall or kept near the computer. That negates the idea of security. If there is a problem, you will still be required to manually enter the proper user name and password for each account.
It is much safer to backup all your security settings on to a removable storage device, such as a USB flash drive, and store it in a secure location, well away from the computer. Once you restore the configuration from the backup file, the fingerprint reader can be used again.
Doing a backup of the configuration information is also helpful if you have to reformat the computer or move to a different computer. If the computer has the same type of fingerprint scanner and software, you can restore the backed up configuration and all the settings will be available on the new computer.
The fingerprint reader drivers and the security applications are designed to work on specific models and operating systems. All of the device drivers and security applications designed and approved for the original configuration of your notebook are available on the HP Drivers and Downloads support web site. The drivers and programs used on one model may not be compatible and may not work with other models.
Tips to solve fingerprint reader problems.
The BIOS must support the use of a biometric device and the fingerprint reader option must be enabled in the BIOS.
The biometric device must be recognized by the operating system and displayed in the device Manager.
The fingerprint reader driver must be designed for the brand of hardware component installed and the operating system.
The security application installed must be compatible with the device driver.
