DESCRIPTION

Most HP systems manufactured since the year 2000 have BIOS support for hard drive self-testing. On most systems, the functionality is referred to as Drive Protection System (DPS) Self-test and the procedure for running the DPS Self-test is the same for all such systems. However, on some mid-level or entry-level systems the functionality is referred to as HDD Self-testing and the procedure for running HDD Self-tests varies from product line to product line.

Following are lists of HP systems that have support for HDD or DPS self-tests and the exact procedures for running them are given in the "Details" section.

HP Systems Having DPS Self-test Support

  • Compaq D315
  • Compaq Evo D3xx (all models)
  • Compaq Evo D5xx (all models)
  • HP Compaq d3xx (all models)
  • HP Compaq d5xx (all models)
  • HP Compaq dc5xxx (all models)
  • HP Compaq dx2100 ST
  • HP Compaq dx6xxx (all models)
  • HP Compaq dc7xxx (all models)

HP Systems Having HDD Self-test Support

  • HP Compaq dx2100 MT
  • HP Compaq dx2200 (all models)
  • HP dx5150 (all models)
NOTE
Systems not listed do not have support for DPS or HDD self-testing.

DETAILS

Procedure 1: HDD Self-test for dx5150 and dx2200 Systems

NOTE
Follow on-screen instructions to navigate menus, select options, and to change values.
  1. Start or restart the system.
  2. Press and hold the F10 key until the system enters F10 Setup.
  3. Select Standard CMOS Features and press the Enter key.
  4. Select the SATA or PATA channel / hard drive to test and press the Enter key.
  5. Select the HDD Short Self-Test and press the Enter key.

Procedure 2: HDD Self-test for dx2100 MT Systems

NOTE
Follow on-screen instructions to navigate menus, select options, and to change values.
  1. Start or restart the system.
  2. Press and hold the F10 key until the system enters F10 Setup.
  3. Select Standard CMOS Features and press the Enter key.
  4. Select the SATA or PATA channel / hard drive to test and press the Enter key.
  5. Select SMART Support and press the Enter key.
  6. Select the HDD Short Self-Test and press the Enter key.

Procedure 3: All Systems Having DPS Self-test Support

NOTE
Use the Arrow keys to select various menus, menu items, and to change values (unless otherwise specified).
  1. Start or restart the computer.
  2. Press and hold the F10 key until the system enters F10 Setup.
  3. Select the appropriate language option.
  4. Press the Enter key.
  5. Select Storage > DPS Self-Test (this option will not be available if no DPS capable drives have been detected).
  6. Supported drives will be listed.
  7. Select the hard drive to be tested and follow on-screen prompts to complete the test.
